Why doesn’t medical insurance, including VHIS, cover congenital diseases diagnosed before age 8, while critical illness insurance does?

Congenital diseases may have a low incidence rate, but once diagnosed, they often come with high treatment costs, lifelong care needs, and increased risk of co-morbidities. These factors can place a heavy financial burden on affected families.

If medical insurance and/or VHIS were to cover all treatment costs for congenital conditions, it could lead to a disproportionate premium burden on policyholders of all age groups. In the spirit of fairness and sustainability, we believe it is more appropriate to address these specific health needs through a separate product.

That’s why we designed Bowtie Children's Growth Critical Illness Insurance, a plan tailored for newborns and young children as the population most impacted by congenital diseases. Instead of reimbursing medical expenses, this plan offers a lump-sum payout, giving parents the flexibility to use the funds for a range of needs, including medical treatment, counseling, rehabilitation, and palliative care, many of which may fall outside the scope of VHIS.

This approach allows us to strike a balance between the unmet needs of children facing congenital illnesses and the broader insurance needs of the population.

Ultimately, we recommend that parents consider applying for both VHIS and BB CI to give their children comprehensive, well-rounded protection from birth through childhood.
